Stop Signs use to be Yellow

Did ya know that the “Stop” signs were not always red? When they first made their debut in Michigan around 1915 they were white with black writing. In the early 1920’s they were standardized as a yellow octagon with black writing. They signs stayed yellow until 1954 when they were changed to yellow to match traffic lights.

The Term “Southpaw” Comes from Baseball not Boxing

baseballThe term “southpaw” that is commonly use in combative sports such as boxing and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), actually originated in baseball. Southpaw identifies that person is left-handed or using a left-handed stance. This term was started by a Chicago sports writer named Charles Seymour. Charles use “southpaw’ to describe left-handed pitcher. This was do to most baseball diamonds being laid out so that right-handed pitchers faced West and the batter facing East, This was to prevent the sun from being into the eyes of the players. When a left-handed pitcher stood on the mound his throwing arm faced South.

The Hawaiian alphabet (piapa), was written by 19th century missionaries. The alphabet contains 12 letters: 5 vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and 7 consonants (h, k, l, m, n, p, w). To simplify pronunciation, sound consonants as in English and break up words so they are easy to say.
